Lumiere temporary ranks fail on the first night!
Following all our hard work to try and get temporary ranks approved for the Lumiere festival, there were problems with both on the first night!
Old Elvet rank was still coned off at 4.30pm and the minions, sorry Marshalls were trying to move taxis on. Shortly after this they did move the cones. There were a couple of cars parked on the rank which were also owned by the minions who though they had more right to park on the taxi rank than the taxis did! (pleased to report they got parking tickets)

The rank on Sutton Street just didn't seem to materialise, as was blocked with private cars No doubt also belonging to the minions) here's the view of the rank at 10pm from a driver attempting to use the rank!
We have a driver who attended Lumiere with his family, and overheard an elderly gentleman asking a minion where he could get a taxi, and the minons reply was "All the normal ranks are closed, so I don't know" So it would appear the Council and Artichoke have yet again allowed the taxi trade to be swept aside, and simply paid us lip service
By offering rank space, clear signage and all promising all minions will briefed on where the taxi ranks are located.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Taxi Ranks for Lumiere 2017
Follwing discusions between DLTA, Durham County Council and Lumiere, we are pleased to report that there will be 2 taxi ranks for the event. One on Old Elvet, starting outside the Marriot Royal County Hotel, and the other on Sutton Street, under the viaduct!
D.C.C. have also agreed to ensure that the taxi ranks are sign posted, and Artichoke have marked their locations on the map included in the Lumiere Programme
This is the first time taxi provison has been considered during the planning stage, and a great result for both the trade and DLTA!

Are fake taxis a problem in County Durham?
We are concerned at the number of private hire vehicles licensed by neighbouring authorites currently 'touting' (illegally plying for hire) in County Durham! This isn't an issue limited to county durham though, please take a little time to watch the following episode of Fake Britain.
